STATEMENT OF ARTIST/DESIGNER/CRAFTSMAN PHILOSOPHY
Silverware to me has to be aesthetically pleasing, with a sculptural visual strength. My designs are founded on a balance of line, form and proportion which harmonize with the detail in the tactile finished pieces.
Since completing his art and design education, Michael has run his own workshop, working mainly to commission and recently designing and making work for exhibition.
For nearly three decades, between 1967 and 1996, he lectured in Silversmithing and Jewellery at the University of Ulster (formerly Ulster Polytechnic). He served as the Head of the School of Fine and Applied Arts from 1990 until he was granted early retirement from the University in 1996.
Throughout his career Michael has been involved in numerous professional activities promoting crafts throughout the island of Ireland. This has included: serving on the management board of the Crafts Council of Ireland for 14 years; establishing and reviewing training courses; and jurying for international craft trade fairs and exhibitions.
